John Ray & Sons’ Pink Truck Raises $14K+ To Help Fight Breast Cancer

Thursday, October 22, 2009 – John Ray & Sons’ President Ken Ray presented a check in the amount of $14,747.37 to the Northeastern New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The amount represents the number of gallons of fuel (over 1.4 million) the company’s Pink Truck – painted in Komen’s signature color – delivered from October 2008 through September 2009, the first year of the company’s two-year Fueling a Cure program.

The Pink Truck is designed to promote breast cancer awareness throughout the community and to raise funds for education, screenings and treatment in the Capital Region. Similar to a moving billboard, this truck covers approximately 1,000 miles per week, delivering fuel to homes and businesses in a nine-county area: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington.

“Today is a milestone – the culmination of the first year of John Ray & Sons’ journey to get the greater Capital Region to ‘Think Pink,'” said Mr. Ray. “And, I’d like to thank our customers – the best people on earth – hundreds of whom specifically requested that the Pink Truck deliver their fuel,” he said.

“It has been our belief since the program’s inception that if just one woman is reminded or inspired to have a mammogram because of this effort, the program is a success,” Mr. Ray said.

“It is our pleasure to be able to make this donation as we begin our second year of Fueling a Cure during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” Mr. Ray said, noting that the Pink Truck is among the company’s on-going tradition of community service started by his grandfather when he established the company in 1904.

Lynette Stark, Executive Director of the NENY Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said, “I can think of no better way to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, than through this very generous donation from John Ray and Sons and the community the company serves.”

To further support efforts to increase awareness of breast cancer, John Ray & Sons conducted a “Spot the Pink Truck” promotion throughout September. People were asked to report on the truck and its travels. For each report, John Ray & Sons donated an additional $5 to Komen.

The participants were entered into a random drawing for a gas log set from Ray Murray, Inc., with installation by John Ray & Sons. “The winner was John Vooris of West Sand Lake,” Mr. Ray said. “And, we wish to thank all of those whose entries helped to grow our donation to Komen today.”
