DIY tips for air conditioner maintenance

Let’s get ready for summer!

Before the hot summer temps arrive, now is a good time to take a look at your air conditioner. The unit that sits outside your house is the condenser and cools the air entering your home. Basic maintenance should be done every spring and fall season.

Here are some quick, simple things you can do to ensure your air conditioner or heat pump lasts longer and operates efficiently.

1. Clear any debris from around your outside unit. Leaves, weeds, and other yard debris can blow and pile up next to your condenser. Smaller pieces can get sucked inside causing a buildup and significantly reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner.
2. Make sure you don’t have plants, bushes, or trees too close to the condenser. Pollen, seeds, etc. can stick to your coils adding to buildup.  Plantings closer than a few feet may cause restrictions on air flow causing problems with how your home is air conditioned and potentially increase your utility bill.
3. Schedule an appointment for a safety check and thorough cleaning. Our professional service techs will check your fuel pressure, clean the nozzle and coils, inspect the blower motor, exhaust flue and flue draft inducer motor and other sensors and controls.
4. If you need to turn on your air conditioning prior to your annual service check and cleaning, remember to remove the cover from the outside unit and clean and check any vents to make sure they are clear.
