John Ray & Sons' Fueling a Cure Program Raises $13K+ To Help Fight Breast Cancer

Posted on: Wednesday, November 17, 2010

TROY, NY – John Ray & Sons' President Ken Ray presented a check in the amount of $13,289.84 to the Northeastern New York Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® today.

The amount represents the number of gallons of fuel (over 1.3 million) the company's Pink Truck – painted in Komen's signature color – delivered from October 2009 through September 2010, the second year of the company's Fueling a Cure program.

The Pink Truck is designed to promote breast cancer awareness throughout the community and to raise funds for education, screenings and treatment in the Capital Region. The Fueling a Cure program has raised a total of $28,037.21 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure since its inception.

Similar to a moving billboard, this truck covers approximately 1,000 miles per week, delivering fuel to homes and businesses in Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties in New York and Bennington County in Vermont.

"Today is another highlight in our efforts to increase awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection,'" said Mr. Ray. "And, I'd like to thank our customers, staff and suppliers for helping us move forward in our mission," he said.

"It has been our belief since we began the Fueling a Cure program, that if just one woman is inspired to have a mammogram because of this effort, the program is a success," Mr. Ray said.

"We have recently renewed our commitment to this cause by extending the Fueling a Cure program for a third year," Mr. Ray said, noting that the Pink Truck is among the company's on-going tradition of community service started by his grandfather when he established the company in 1904.

Lynette Stark, Executive Director of the NENY Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said, "We are extremely thankful for the attention the Pink Truck brings to our efforts, the support of the local community and this generous donation from John Ray & Sons."

John Ray & Sons also conducted a "Spot the Pink Truck" contest to further promote breast cancer awareness. People were asked to report on the truck and its travels. For each sighting, John Ray & Sons donated an additional $5 to Komen.

The participants were entered into a random drawing for a Vermont Castings gas grill. "The winner was Ed Hepp of Buskirk," Mr. Ray said. "We want to thank all of those who participated and helped to grow our donation to Komen today."

ABOUT THE NENY AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists and has invested nearly $1.5 billion dollars to fulfill their mission. They have become the largest source of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Locally, the Northeastern New York Affiliate, now in its 16th year, serves an 11-county area of New York and has raised over $2.1 million dollars for local breast health and breast cancer outreach, education, screening and treatment. For more information, visit www.komenneny.org.
